"The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start."
Kitsap TriBabes
First Brick De-brief

Dear Tri Babes,

You were STUPENDOUS at Saturday's Brick -- all 170 of you!!! Congrats on your HUGE accomplishment. All problems occurred BEFORE the official start of the Brick --Trixie, clad in her diva dress, was knocked over by the wind. Of course, she was
completely indignant at this insult but thanks to the quick thinking efforts of Sheri Whetstine, who immediately rushed to Trixie's side, performed CPR, righted her, and then secured her to the church pillar with a bungee cord, Trixie WAS able to continue her ceremonial duties for the remainder of the brick. (This after Sheri had already solved my "dead batteries in the megaphone mini-crisis.")

Real, live, non-sarcastic kudos go to
Terry Harter. She graciously "took one for the team" by getting the first bike fall over and done with on the way from the parking lot TO the Brick!!! Thank goodness all she sprained was her dignity. Still, such an indignity might have convinced me that Disney World was "no longer worth it." Instead, she shrugged the episode off with humor and proceeded to comPLETE the Brick -- despite the fact that she hadn't been on a bike in over 20 years!!! I'd say she earns this week's "You *&%$ing ROCK" Award!!!

Surprise, surprise, veteran
Tammy Gaffke took this week's "Lapin Award" honors by finishing both the bike and the run first. When she was finished, she was thrilled to announce that Dane had told her that she had gotten a little faster on the bike since last year. What will REALLY stroke her ego, however, is Dane's admission to me later that on one of the downhills, he actually had to push himself to stay ahead of her!!!

Dane feels that his REAL accomplishment of the day was that his tire sprouted a flat while I was discussing Pink Purse Power at the pre-Brick meeting. By the time I launched the first wave, he had the tire changed and had done so well enough that he didn't pinch it and create a second flat on his ride. Even I, exhausted by his need for constant pubescent ego stroking, found this fete impressive!!! Yes, Dane, this represents MAD tire changing skills!!!

Our "
Maillot Rose" Award, which honors the final finisher of each week's Brick, goes to Teri Huddleston. Please note the joy and pride on her face and dismiss ALL worries that you might come in last. If you do, it is a badge of honor, not shame.

At our Lake Swim orientation on Tuesday, special
"Lady of the Lake" honors go to Lisa Ellingboe. Lisa experienced a traumatic water crisis as a child, literally turned towards home TWICE on the way to the Lake Swim and yet, still managed to show up for the a.m. swim. She gamely suppressed her tears and allowed herself to take the directions step by step. She comPLETEd all of the water games AND swam out to the rope and back. When she experienced the inevitable swim panic half way, she allowed herself to be saved, took my advice about adjusting her breathing, calmed herself down and continued on. It was a true privilege to swim with her on Tuesday and I truly hope she inspires all of you to continue empowering yourselves step by step.

I hope that you will remember
Saturday's Brick Tip regarding proper helmet fitting: 1) make sure that the chin strap fits snuggly; 2) make sure that the front of the helmet is pulled down close to the eyebrows. This proper fitting will insure that the helmet actually DOES its job and keeps your brain safe!!!

None of this "wild and wacky" Tri Babe training could happen without our volunteers -- we will now reveal, in no particular order, the incredibly generous people to whom you should send out light beams of thanks:
Carla Lawson, Teneka Morley-Short, Cyndy Ayers, Jaime Reeves, Tina D'Astoli, Diane Flinn, The Timinator, David Kiesel, Gary Daniels, Ken Cox, and Keith Willoughby. I reserve the right to properly thank my David, Miller, but he KNOWS that you appreciate him!!!

THANK YOU to the entire group for your $109 Pink Purse Power contribution to Karen Twietmeyer's support of her recently deceased cousin Tricia's Relay for Life efforts. Next week, we will support "Spread the Threads."

I can't wait to see you at this week's Swim and Brick. -- Lisa Be Your Ever Lovin' Turtle

P.S. Confidential to the Tri Babe who was disappointed that she had to walk her bike a little bit: PLEASE realize that
this STILL counts!!!! You have STILL comPLETEd, you have STILL improved your fitness, you have STILL accomplished the baby step that guarantees you will succeed at the next, progressively bigger step that you take. And, I have had to walk my bike in an Ironman, for goodness sake. Do you think my medal is tainted? Chrissy Wellington, the first place female Ironman Championship winner had to get off HER bike in the 2008 Ironman. Is she any LESS of a champion?
