She's A Super Freak!!!
*** YES we will meet for our a.m. and p.m. Lake Swim tomorrow, August 11th, as usual.***
Dear Tri-Babes,
Well, you survived the “Freak-Out” at last Tuesday’s lake swim AND by all conceivable markers,
Saturday’s Mini-tri was a smashing success. Each of you who started, successfully comPLETEd. This
means that you ARE Sprint Distance Triathlon worthy. Your only job now is to “stay the course.” Don’t
worry, I will send out an extension schedule to take you from now to Tri Turtle Tri. YES, we will
keep up our twice weekly group trainings until TTT.
I would like to give special recognition to our Mini-Tri Volunteers. Obviously, this simply would NOT have
been possible without them. John & Jerri Kaesar and Bill Beatty got up at Oh Dark Thirty to physically
set up your swim course. Lynn Grellner successfully coordinated your swim course safely and logistics.
Teneka Morley-Short successfully coordinated Check-In and Transition. Here is a (hopefully) comPLETE
list, (in no particular order, of course) of all the amazing people who made your dress rehearsal so
successful: Tim “Go ahead and call me John” Whetstine, Aaron Espy, Carla Lawson, Cyndy Ayers,
Ken Cox, David Harter, Laura Wheeler, Lisl Ulrich, Lisa Pitcher, Jim & Colton Kohnke, Robyn
Nelson, Gary Simmons, Sandy Willoughby, Katherine Adams, Krista Gomes, Sheri Whetstine,
Corri Olsen, Kate Espy, Sofi Grellner, Carly Whetsil, Valerie Houtary, Doug Crist, Gary Cree, and
Margo Waldrup Riehard (sp?).
Before Lynn and I started directing Tri Turtle Tri, I would always ignore the sponsor and volunteer info in my
race packet. Now that I am part of the directorship for an event, and truly understand how critical these
people are, I make sure to really look at the names of the businesses and individuals that are listed and
appreciate them. So, I beg you to go back and re-read the previous paragraph so that these generous,
enthusiastic people can get their true due!
Each of you was a triathlon goddess. But, I would like to give special mention to several Tri Babes.
Colette “You can call me Colleen” Berna overcame a 6 minute deficit on the swim to garner our Lapin
Award for first finisher. This underscores an important triathlon reality that all of you Tri Hares should
understand: you can not WIN a triathlon on the swim leg. There simply isn’t enough distance to gain
enough time over your competition. Instead, on the swim, your job is simply to keep yourself in the
running. Dane has NEVER come out of the water first, yet he has won two triathlons. And, on the races he
does not win, more often than not, his overall time is faster than those people who beat him out of the
water.
The person who DID come out of the water first on Saturday wasn’t even a Tri Babe. Her name is Peggy
Gaskill and she is training to swim the English Channel later this month. It was a true honor to have her
use our little mini-tri as a training day.
Our “You *&%$ing ROCK” honors go to Frances Cunningham and Melissa Mazdzer. Both of them
began the mini-tri, got overwhelmed, turned around and exited the water. Both of them allowed themselves
to be re-routed and agreed to a “Re-Start.” Think of the amount of courage, perseverance, and
reasonableness this takes. Once most people make the decision to “give up,” they get obstinately
entrenched in it – it becomes a matter of ego and no amount of encouragement and good sense will
convince them to positively re-route. But, first Frances and then Melissa dug deep, turned around and
allowed themselves to be escorted by Dane and Lisa Pitcher. BOTH comPLETEd, not only the swim but
the entire mini-tri, successfully. When Frances got out of the water, I thanked her for what she did.
Because SHE was willing to turn around, Melissa was willing to be inspired by her. I hope that the next
time any of you feel overwhelmed at the beginning of an event – a comPLETEly natural/normal/common
reaction, by the way – you will remember Fran and Melissa’s amazing fete on Saturday and trust that it IS
possible, to stop, calm down, re-route and return to successful comPLETion. Who the hell cares if it costs
you 5 or 15 minutes? Who the hell cares if you come in last? Which story would you rather tell: a) I got
freaked out at the beginning so I just gave up and went home OR b) I got freaked out at the beginning and
had to take X many minutes to calm myself down. But, after I did, I was able to finish the race. I didn’t get
the time I wanted but I finished!
I hope that all of you noticed armless Trixie in her Tri Babe supporter shirt AND enjoyed having Brayden
“High 5” you with her disembodied arms. Please know that she’ll be with you, in spirit, even inch of your
race day – during both the darkest depths and the soaring heights of your comPLETtion!!!
Finally, thanks to Judie McLaughlin for providing the yummy cookies – this was HER way of thanking
each and every one of you for contributing to last week’s Mission Creek Corrections Center Pink Purse
Power collection. As for this week’s collection, we raised a jaw dropping $558.67 for the Trenten Morris
memorial service and scholarship fund.
